Surtitle, context ┐
For the 2024 Art Biennale in Venezia, the collective (Denicolai &
Provoost, Antoinette Jattiot, Nord, Spec uloos) has developed a
multidisciplinary scenario based on the participation of existing
folkloric giants from different communities. Unlike a finished work, the
project treats the Belgian Pavilion in Venezia as a point of transit,
representing the journey so far and yet to come in kaleidoscopic
perspective. The elevated staging of the giants and the accompanying
sound installation create an ungrounded space, a terrain of freedom
where emphasis on the oral and the co-construction of narratives invites
reconsideration of both ancient tales and modern myths. Petticoat
Government is a choral work, in movement, led by a collective and
multidisciplinary body that incarnates the possibility of shared, joyful
governance. The position of author is shared by seven members (Sophie
Boiron, Valentin Bollaert, Simona Denicolai, Pauline Fockedey, Pierre
Huyghebaert, Antoinette Jattiot and Ivo Provoost) who form a team,
assisted and accompanied by many others.

Until november 24, meet the Young Curators Storytellers, sit on the
bench while reading the pink newspaper, dance under the giants, find the
Murano-glass bean in the form of a very small giant in the Petticoat
Government’s cake.
──── Catalogue ┐
In the Pavilion’s copy shop in Venezia, the catalogue of Petticoat
Government is printed on-demand from the website. This printing practice
aims to avoid unnecessary over-production and to give a physical
dimension to the performative edition. The website is developed by http://variable.club and takes the side of a stubborn code ecology described in chapter 11 of the Digital Ethics publication (https://cloud.encc.eu/s/dXYWA7LN95dtDgn).
This makes it possible to offer a wide and narrow screen (cell phone)
web interface, on the one hand, and quality pdf outputs, on the other.
This pdf serves to print the catalogue. The printed catalogue that you
can buy in the Pavilion is packaged in a copy of the newspaper L'Petti
Lion (download the full pdf on https://petticoatgovernment.party/i/gazzetta.pdf).
In its current version, as printed on-demand in the pavilion, the
catalogue consists of notes written by the Young Curators Storytellers
and contributions from authors, researchers, anthropologists,
socio-cultural facilitators and art critics: Jean-Baptiste Carobolante,
Manah Depauw, Benoît Dusart, eli lebailly and Maximilien Atangana, l'art
même (Christine Jamart), Silvia Mesturini, Alexis Zimmer. These
invitations to authors from disciplines outside the field of art,
strictly speaking, reflect the diversity of the project’s biotope. The
content of the published version has been augmented throughout the
presentation at the Biennale. From December on, the printed and packaged
catalogue will be available from MOREPublishers (https://morepublishers.be).
──── Bruxsels party, finissage ┐
For ℘ℊ, the party establishes new gestures, replacing the rites imposed
by the event in which the scenario takes place. It punctuates an
organisation of time essential to social life. To mark the end of the
Biennale in Venezia and the return of Petticoat Government to Belgium,
the collective and their accomplices are getting together for a party on
November 30, from 8pm, at Le Petit Lion, Rue Haute 232 Hoogstraat, 1000
Brussels, to which everyone is invited.

──── From Venezia to Dunkerque: 2025 ┐
After announcements of the giants' departures in local magazines
(Belgium, France, Spain's Basque Country), the flag-raising in Leuven
(BE), the picnic in the Alps at Lago di Resia and the stopover in the
rotating press of the Gazzetta dello Sport in Padova (IT), the seven
months and seven days spent at the Belgian Pavilion in Venezia, the
journey continues in 2025, to Charleroi (april 2025, in partnership with
the BPS22), then Lille and Dunkerque (autumn 2025, in partnership with
Lille 3000 and FRAC Grand Large).

Surtitre, contexte ┐
Pour la Biennale de Venezia 2024, le collectif (Denicolai &
Provoost, Antoinette Jattiot, Nord, Spec uloos) propose un scénario
pluridisciplinaire à partir de géant·es folkloriques existant·es
emprunté·es à différentes communautés. À l’encontre d’une œuvre close,
le Pavillon vénitien est imaginé comme un lieu de passage avec une
optique en kaléidoscope. La scénographie aérienne et sonore qui dispose
les figures gigantesques « hors-sol » interroge, par la place faite à
l’oralité et à la co-construction de récits, l’origine de mythologies
contemporaines et d’histoires séculaires. Petticoat Government est une
œuvre chorale, en mouvement, menée par un corps collectif et
pluridisciplinaire qui incarne la possibilité d'une gouvernance commune
La position d'auteur·trice est partagée par sept membres (Sophie Boiron,
Valentin Bollaert, Simona Denicolai, Pauline Fockedey, Pierre
Huyghebaert, Antoinette Jattiot, Ivo Provoost) qui font équipe,
assisté·es et accompagné·es par toustes les autres.

Jusqu'au 24 novembre, le scénario de Petticoat Government est encore à
Venezia. Écoutez et partagez vos histoires avec les Young Curators
Storytellers, lisez le journal rose assis sur le banc, dansez sous les
géant·es, trouvez la fève en verre de Murano dans le gâteau de ℘ℊ dans
un bar populaire du quartier.
──── Catalogue ┐
Dans le copyshop du Pavillon, il est possible d'acheter le kutch et le
catalogue imprimé sur demande à partir du site internet. Cette pratique
de l’impression vise à éviter la surproduction inutile et à donner une
dimension physique à l’édition performative. Le développement du site
par http://variable.club prend le parti d’une écologie du code opiniâtre décrite dans le chapitre 11, de la publication Digital Ethics (https://cloud.encc.eu/s/dXYWA7LN95dtDgn).
Le site est conçu comme une interface web écran large et étroit
(téléphone) d’une part, et des sorties PDF soignées d’autre part. Ces
fichiers permettent d'imprimer aussi le catalogue directement chez soi.
Lorsqu'il est imprimé et acheté à Venezia, le catalogue est emballé dans
un exemplaire du journal du Pavillon, L'Petti Lion (téléchargez le pdf
complet sur https://petticoatgovernment.party/i/gazzetta.pdf).
Dans sa version actuelle qui a été augmentée tout au long du projet, on
compte des contributions d’auteurices, chercheur.euses, anthropologues,
animateur socio-culturel et critiques d’art : Jean-Baptiste
Carobolante, Manah Depauw, Benoît Dusart, eli lebailly et Maximilien
Atangana, l'art même (Christine Jamart), Silvia Mesturini, Alexis
Zimmer. Ces invitations à des auteurices venant d’horizons autres que
celui du champ de l’art à proprement parler traduisent la diversité du
biotope du projet. À partir de décembre, le catalogue imprimé et emballé
sera disponible à la vente sur le site des éditeurs MOREpublishers (https://morepublishers.be).
──── Fête à Bruxsels, finissage ┐
Pour ℘ℊ, la fête instaure de nouveaux gestes qui se substituent
aux rites imposés par l'évènement dans lequel s'inscrit le scénario.
Elle ponctue une organisation du temps, essentielle aux besoins de la
vie sociale. Pour célébrer la fin de la Biennale de Venezia et le retour
de ℘ℊ en Belgique, le collectif et leurs complices se réunissent pour
une fête le samedi 30 novembre, à partir de 20h au bar Le Petit Lion,
Rue Haute 232 Hoogstraat, 1000 Bruxelles, une fête gratuite à laquelle
tout le monde est convié.

succèdent et traitent une matière mouvante, mise en forme par la
complicité d'un grand nombre d'acteur.ices. Après les annonces des
départs des géant·es dans des magazines locaux (Belgique, France, Pays
Basque espagnol), le lever du drapeau métamorphe à Leuven (BE), le
pique-nique dans les Alpes au lac de Resia et la halte dans les
rotatives de la Gazzetta dello Sport à Padova (IT), les sept mois et
sept jours passés au Pavillon belge à Venezia, le voyage continue en
2025, à Charleroi (au printemps, en partenariat avec le BPS22), puis
Lille et Dunkerque (automne, en partenariat avec Lille 3000 et FRAC
Grand Large).

Boventitel, context ┐
In het kader van de Biënnale van Venezia 2024 stelt het collectief
(Denicolai & Provoost, Antoinette Jattiot, Nord, Spec uloos)
een multidisciplinair scenario voor met bestaande folkloristische
reuzen en reuzinnen die geleend zijn van diverse gemeenschappen. Het
Paviljoen in Venezia is geen afgerond werk, maar wordt voorgesteld als
een etappe, als een tussenstop, met een caleidoscopische optiek. Door
plaats te maken voor het orale en het collectief bedenken van verhalen
onderzoekt de bovengrondse en auditieve scenografie die de reusachtige
figuren doet zweven de oorsprong van hedendaagse mythologieën en
eeuwenoude geschiedenissen. Petticoat Government is een koorwerk, dat in
beweging is en geleid wordt door een collectief en multidisciplinair
lichaam dat de verpersoonlijking is van de mogelijkheid van een
gezamenlijk en vreugdevol bestuur. De positie van auteur wordt gedeeld
door zeven leden (Sophie Boiron, Valentin Bollaert, Simona Denicolai,
Pauline Fockedey, Pierre Huyghebaert, Antoinette Jattiot, Ivo Provoost)
die werken als een team, bijgestaan en begeleid door alle anderen.

Het Petticoat Government scenario ontrolt zich nog tot en met 24
november 2024 in Venezia, waar je kan luisteren naar en je verhalen kunt
delen met de Young Curators Storytellers, waar je de roze krant kan
lezen zittend op de bank, waar je kan dansen onder de reuzen en de boon
in de ℘ℊ cake kan vinden in een populair lokaal café.

In de copyshop van het paviljoen wordt de publicatie vanaf de website on
demand geprint. Hierdoor wordt nutteloze overdruk vermeden en krijgt
het performatieve uitgeven ook een fysiek tintje. De site is door http://variable.club
ontworpen als een breed- en smal scherm (telefoon) webinterface aan de
ene kant en een verzorgde PDF aan de andere kant. Met deze bestanden kan
u de catalogus ook rechtstreeks thuis afdrukken. Als de catalogus in
Venezia gedrukt en gekocht wordt, is hij verpakt in een exemplaar van de
krant van het paviljoen, L'Petti Lion (download the full pdf on https://petticoatgovernment.party/i/gazzetta.pdf).
In de huidige versie, die gedurende het hele project werd uitgebreid,
zijn er bijdragen van auteurs, onderzoekers, antropologen,
sociaal-culturele animatoren en kunstcritici: Jean-Baptiste Carobolante,
Manah Depauw, Benoît Dusart, eli lebailly en Maximilien Atangana, l'art
même (Christine Jamart), Silvia Mesturini, Alexis Zimmer. Deze
uitnodigingen aan auteurs uit andere horizonten dan die van de kunst,
strikt genomen, weerspiegelen de diversiteit binnen de biotoop van het
project. Vanaf december zal de gedrukte en verpakte catalogus te koop
zijn op de website van de uitgevers MOREpublishers (https://morepublishers.be).
──── Feest in Bruxsels, finissage ┐
Voor ℘ℊ introduceert het feest nieuwe gebaren die de rituelen vervangen,
opgelegd door het evenement waarin het scenario zich afspeelt. Het
benadrukt een organisatie van de tijd die essentieel is voor de
behoeften van het sociale leven. Om het einde van de Biënnale van
Venezia en de terugkeer van Petticoat Government naar België te
onderlijnen, komen het collectief en hun handlangers op 30 november
vanaf 20.00 uur bijeen voor een feest in Le Petit Lion, Hoogstraat 232,
1000 Brussel, waar iedereen welkom is.

──── Van Venezia tot Dunkerque: 2025 ┐
℘ℊ is opgevat als een scenario met opeenvolgende hoofdstukken die
een levende materie aanspreken, vormgegeven door de medeplichtigheid van
een groot aantal actoren. Na de aankondiging van het vertrek van de
reuzen in lokale tijdschriften (België, Frankrijk, Baskenland), na het
hijsen van de vormveranderende vlag in Leuven (BE), na de picknick in de
Alpen aan het Reschenmeer en de tussenstop bij de rolpersen van de
Gazzetta dello Sport in Padova (IT), na de zeven maanden en zeven
dagen in het Belgisch Paviljoen in Venezia, gaat de reis verder in 2025,
in Charleroi (in de lente, in samenwerking met BPS22), vervolgens in
Lille en Dunkerque (in de herfst, in samenwerking met Lille 3000 en FRAC
Grand Large).
