The crew Denicolai & Provoost · Antoinette Jattiot · Nord · Spec
uloos, cross-mixing art, curating, architecture, typography and
cartography, takes part in the 60th Venice Biennale 2024, recently
titled Foreigners Everywhere by curator Adriano Pedrosa.
──── Exergue ┐
Since May 2023, on both sides of the Franco-Belgian border, but also
further south in Europe as in Spain and Italy, various
brother-and-sisterhoods, committees and associations, all guardians of
folkloric giants have been approached by a collective under the name of
Petticoat Government. These still discreet alliances predict a more
informal representation of the territorial concept of Belgium at the
Venice Biennale in 2024.
Unfolding ────┐
The collective appointed by the Wallonia-Brussels Federation and
Wallonia-Brussels International to occupy the Belgian Pavilion has
devised a project that displaces the traditional exhibition format
through its successive chapters and its fictional, subversive potential.
In a collaborative way they have seized a scenario that plays on scale
and tensions between the human being, the pavilion, the landscape and
the gigantic.
Figures ────┐
This it does with the help of multiple accomplices: existing local and
cross-border figures of giants, from both near and far, set in motion in
a new story. Through their displacements, the giant bodies shape in new
ways the surrounding space and forms of identification and projection.
Inspired by the living base of popular narrative, Petticoat Government
diverts the symbolic and political weight of the giant as object. It is
thanks to their adaptability and an anchoring in the common body of
society that giants, supporters of committed struggles, have emerged in
recent years and empower our journey with their joyful militancy.
Petticoat Government is a party to which all are invited.
Kaleidoscope ────┐
Deriving from a historical expression of a reversal of power relations,
the title suggests a revolution still in progress. It seeks to instil a
jocular unease, blurring the fringes between disciplines. The project
mixes genres and attitudes as means for questioning complexity and for
entering into contact with the worlds with which it relates. Petticoat
Government is a transformation of reality through fiction, actively
integrating the dimension of orality and storytelling. Brussels, Venice,
the Alps in between, and returning via Belgium at BPS22 in Charleroi
and then northern France at FRAC Dunkirk, it wants to sow open stories
that will thrive on the journey, told chapter after chapter. Unlike a
closed work, the Venetian Pavilion is imagined as a stage in a process, a
place of passage, with a kaleidoscope perspective. Understood as a tool
for diffracting the gaze and enchanting the image of the world, it
recalls the co-existence of multiple realities and the variability of
ever-shifting colours in the same space-time framework. PG’s
kaleidoscopic giants offer a pretext for opening up a space of attention
to communities and the actors who comprise them.

Beyond stigmatizing individually-based practice, the project selected
for the Belgian Pavilion of the Venice Biennale 2024 underlines the
feasibility of a collective 'doing together'.

uloos (croisant art, pratiques curatoriales, architecture, typographie
et cartographie) prend part à la 60e Biennale de Venise 2024, titrée
récemment "Foreigners Everywhere" par le commissaire Adriano Pedrosa.
──── Exergue ┐
Depuis mai 2023, de part et d'autre de la frontière franco-belge mais
aussi plus au sud de l'Europe comme en Espagne et en Italie, diverses
confréries, comités, associations et sororités gardiennes d'un౿ géante,
géantභx et/ou géant folklorique, sont approché·es par un collectif sous
le nom de Petticoat Government. Ces alliances encore discrètes présument
une représentation plus informelle du concept territorial concernant la
Belgique dans le cadre de la Biennale de Venise en 2024.
Déroulé ────┐
Le collectif désigné par la Fédération Wallonie-Bruxelles et Wallonie
Bruxelles International pour occuper le Pavillon belge a échafaudé un
projet qui se saisit, sur un mode collaboratif et horizontal, du format
de l'exposition pour s'en décaler via ses chapitres et son potentiel
fictionnel et subversif. Ensemble, iels proposent un scénario qui
emprunte et met en mouvement des géanx existanx, créant une variété de
jeux d'échelle et de tensions entre l'être humain, le pavillon, le
paysage et le gigantesque.
Figures ────┐
Grâce au soutien de multiples complices, les figures locales
transfrontalières des géanx, provenant de territoires proches et plus
distants, sont mises en mouvement dans une nouvelle narration. À travers
leurs déplacements, des corps façonnent autrement l'espace et les
pouvoirs d’identification et de projection qui les entourent. Inspiré du
socle vivant du populaire, PG détourne le poids symbolique et l'usage
politique de l'objet du·de la géanx. C’est grâce à leur adaptabilité et à
un ancrage dans la société que des géanx partisanx de luttes engagées
ont aussi vu le jour ces dernières années et empouvoirent la traversée
de leur militantisme joyeux. Petticoat Government est une fête à
laquelle touxtes sont convié·es.
Kaléidoscope ────┐
Dérivé d'une dénomination historique d'un renversement de rapport de
pouvoir, le titre suggère une révolution toujours en cours. PG cherche à
insuffler un trouble riant en brouillant les lisières entre les
disciplines. Le projet active le potentiel du mélange des genres et des
attitudes comme autant de possibles pour questionner la complexité et se
mettre en présence des mondes avec lesquels il relationne. PG est une
transformation du réel par le biais de la fiction, en intégrant
activement la dimension de l’oralité, du conte. Bruxelles, Venise, les
Alpes entre les deux, le retour par la Belgique au BPS22 à Charleroi et
la France du Nord au FRAC à Dunkerque, des histoires ouvertes prospèrent
dans le voyage, égrenés chapitre après chapitre. À l'encontre d'une
œuvre close, le Pavillon vénitien est imaginé comme une étape, un lieu
de passage, avec une optique en kaléidoscope. Entendu comme un outil
pour diffracter le regard et enchanter l'image du monde, il rappelle la
co-existence de multiples réalités et de la variabilité de couleurs
toujours mouvantes dans un même espace-temps. Les kaléidoscopes des
géanx de PG offrent un prétexte pour ouvrir un espace d'attention sur
des communautés et les acteur·ices qui les composent.
Postface ┐
Plus que la stigmatisation d'une pratique individuelle, le projet
sélectionné pour le Pavillon belge de la Biennale de Venise 2024
souligne la faisabilité d'un ‘faire avec’ collectif.

Nord · Spec uloos (kruising van kunst, curatoriële praktijken,
architectuur, typografie en cartografie) neemt deel aan de 60e Biënnale
van Venetië 2024, onlangs getiteld «Foreigners Everywhere» door curator
Adriano Pedrosa.
──── Exergue ┐
Sinds mei 2023 worden aan beide zijden van de Frans-Belgische grens,
maar ook verder in het zuiden van Europa zoals in Spanje en Italië
diverse broeder- en zusterschappen, commités, verenigingen, beschermers
van een folkloristische reus en/of reuzin, benaderd door een collectief
onder de naam Petticoat Government. Deze nog discrete allianties
veronderstellen een meer informele representatie van het territoriale
concept België in het kader van de Biënnale van Venetië in 2024.
Afrollen ────┐
Het collectief dat door de Federatie Wallonië-Brussel en Wallonië
Brussel Internationaal is aangeduid om het Belgisch paviljoen te
bezetten, heeft een project in de stijgers gezet dat, in een
gezamenlijke en horizontale modus, het format van de tentoonstelling
overneemt om er via zijn hoofdstukken en fictieve en subversieve
vermogen van af te wijken. Samen stellen zij een scenario voor dat
bestaande reuzen en reuzinnen leent en in beweging zet door zijn spel
met schaal en spanningen tussen de mens, het paviljoen, het landschap en
het gigantische.
Figuren ────┐
Dankzij de steun van uiteenlopende handlangers worden lokale en
grensoverschrijdende figuren van reuzen en reuzinnen in beweging gezet
in een nieuw verhaal. Door de verplaatsing en de nomadische instelling
die de reizen bezielen die wij met hen zullen ondernemen, geven de
lichamen op een andere manier vorm aan de ruimte en het vermogen tot
identificatie en projectie dat ermee gepaard gaat. Petticoat Government
laat zich inspireren door het levende fundament van het volkse, om het
symbolische en politieke gewicht van het object reus/reuzin een andere
wending te geven. Deze cultuur overtreedt en overschrijdt de grenzen in
alle richtingen, en getuigt van de levendigheid en de diversiteit van
hun gemeenschappen. Dat aanpassingsvermogen en de verankering in het
gemeenschappelijke orgaan van de samenleving hebben de voorbije jaren
maatschappijbetrokken reuzen en reuzinnen voortgebracht, die ons tijdens
onze oversteek zullen vergezellen met een vrolijk militantisme.

Caleidoscoop ────┐
De titel is afgeleid van een historische term die verwijst naar een
omkering van de machtsverhoudingen, een revolutie die nog altijd aan de
gang is. Wij streven ernaar om in de marge een vrolijke verstoring
teweeg te brengen door de grenzen tussen disciplines te vervagen. Het
project stimuleert de kracht van de vermenging van genres en posities,
wat tot even zoveel mogelijkheden leidt om de complexiteit in vraag te
stellen en de relaterende werelden te confronteren. petticoat government
is een transformatie van de werkelijkheid door middel van fictie,
waarbij de dimensie van het orale, de vertelling actief wordt ingezet.
Brussel, Venetië, de Alpen ertussen, de terugkeer via België (BPS22
Charleroi), vervolgens het Noorden van Frankrijk : overal willen we open
verhalen strooien die tijdens de reis zullen gedijen, hoofdstuk per
hoofdstuk, als afgeriste zaden. Het Paviljoen in Venetië zal geen
afgesloten werk zijn, maar wordt voorgesteld als een etappe, als een
tussenstop, met een caleidoscopische kijk. pg is opgevat als een
instrument om de blik om te buigen en het beeld van de wereld te
betoveren, en herinnert ons aan de co-existentie van meerdere
realiteiten en aan de variatie van steeds veranderende kleuren in
dezelfde tijdruimte. De caleidoscopen van de pg-reuzen en -reuzinnen
bieden een voorwendsel om een ruimte van aandacht te openen voor
gemeenschappen en de mensen die er deel van uitmaken.
Nawoord ┐
Het Belgisch Paviljoen van de Biënnale van Venetië 2024 wil niet zozeer
het brandmerk zijn van een individuele praktijk als wel de mogelijkheid
onderstrepen van een collectief aan de slag gaan met wat voorhanden is.
